I still haven’t finished with the photos, but I’m getting there. Speaking of getting there…
I arrived at Fiumicino around 4 pm and Italian passport control was easy. He stamped *over* one of my other stamps. I really need to get to the embassy here in Prague to get the extra pages because I’m going to have issues soon. I know, I’ve only been saying this since Japan. I knew I could do a train/metro combo but decided for the direct train into Rome-Termini because that’s where the hostel was and I was . . . → Keep Going: Rome: Recap with (some) photos…

I’m back.
Rome was wonderful. Absolutely amazing.
I’m still editing photos: 218 in total, including 105 of the colosseum. The above is one of my favourites. There will be more photos and a post about the trip soon. Now doing laundry and getting ready for class in the morning.
By Cari, on June 7th, 2007% Two weeks in and one class down.
We basically wrapped yesterday with a tour of the Prague Sports’ Facilities including Sazka Arena, Czech Lawn-Tennis Club (where Navratilova trained before immigrating to the US) and Toyota Arena, home to AC Sparta. We had a great tour of Sazka and received a book about the development of the arena, and were even allowed on the field at Toyota. Even not being much of a soccer fan, that was pretty cool. Although we didn’t have a tour of the tennis center I enjoyed seeing pictures of Martina, since she was Queen at the . . . → Keep Going: Prague: 2 Weeks In

Karlovy Vary is better known to Europeans as Karlsbad. Not surprisingly, I felt more like I was in Germany than in the Czech Republic. Then again, I feel like that a lot of the time in Prague. Prague is as Czech as New York is American. Our tour was run through Premiant and picked us up at the apartments at 8:45 AM. It was about a two hour drive, but you know me and moving vehicles. I was asleep before we got out of Prague.

Perhaps it’s morbid, but to me that is Birkenau. It’s not about a museum attempting to explain what happened, it’s just the camp. The buildings, such as the quarantine bunks, are as they were. It’s more telling than trying to explain what happened, it allows the visitor to see it. Above all, however, it’s a cemetery. Not just the fields or ponds of ashes, there’s the sense that it’s all hallowed ground.
Perhaps Rob Francosi said it best:
The camp is 425 acres, a mile by a mile-and-a-half, but this information offers little guidance. . . . → Keep Going: Auschwitz II: Birkenau

Although I don’t recall which exhibit it was in, that quote captures the essence of my thoughts on historical pilgrimages, which is what I term trips such as this one. Before I left, we struggled. You really can’t say “have fun” on a trip like this but you can hope to have an educational trip. That’s part of why I’ve come to call these ‘historical pilgrimages.” I don’t go for a religious calling but rather as part of a need to know/understand.
I can’t pinpoint my interest in the Holocaust, but I know I . . . → Keep Going: Auschwitz I: Auschwitz
By Cari, on June 3rd, 2007% OK, there’s a two-fold reason for the overview post: I’m still putting together my thoughts on the trip as I go through the photos and I want the miscellaneous stuff kept separate from the camps. I think the camps are going to end up with separate posts as I see them as distinct entities in my head.
My train left from Praha – Hlavni Nadrazi at about 8:30 PM. I didn’t pay attention when choosing my carriage/section and ended up in a smoking one, but I was too lazy to move. I dozed on and off and after being woken . . . → Keep Going: Historical Pilgrimage: Overview

So according to Flight Memory, I’ve flown 112,781 miles since August 2001. I’m not sure whether I expected that to be higher or lower, but I wish there were an equivalent for the bus since apparently the circumfrence of Australia is 10,000 miles and I doubled up in some areas and also went up and down the middle. Re: flight travel, I could go back further but I’m not sure I’ll remember all flights and I don’t think it will add a significant amount with the exception of London in December 2000 and Spain in April . . . → Keep Going: Distance Travelled/River Cruise/Tickets Booked
By Cari, on May 29th, 2007% Well, mostly on foot. We “cheat” and take the number 11 tram from Pod Jezerkhou (on the bottom in the middle) to Muzeum but that’s because it’s way too hilly and/or early.
We had a very interesting lecture this morning from Jiri Pehe, the Director of the NYU in Prague program. I had a rough idea of Czech/Czechoslovakian history, but loved all the holes he filled in. Of course like any good lecture, it left me wanting to know more so I spent part of the afternoon on a quest for books. Came up empty, but I’ll find some when . . . → Keep Going: Prague on Foot/Skype/Citibank, etc.
