Berlin: Thoughts on a United/Divided City

It’s scary, but I think I agree with George W. on something. Apparently on a 2002 visit to Berlin he said the following:

“The history of our time is written in the life of Berlin.”

Somewhat frightening that I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

Today in class we had a discussion on what we’d done for the weekend and a discussion popped up on the relevance of The Wall and whether it will matter or not in 200 years. This class is actually an interesting group in that we range in age from . . . → Keep Going: Berlin: Thoughts on a United/Divided City

Travel and C&HT

create your own visited country map or check our Venice travel guide I think I’ve travelled a lot, but then I look at that map and am somewhat unimpressed. Far too much grey space.I could cheat and list the two countries I’ll visit before going home, but Europe is so squished that it’s hard to tell. The new class is going well. We had two half days of class followed by tours of the city. Areas I’d seen before but nice to see them again. I think it’s safe to say we had the most fun trying . . . → Keep Going: Travel and C&HT

Prague: 2 Weeks In

Two weeks in and one class down.

We basically wrapped yesterday with a tour of the Prague Sports’ Facilities including Sazka Arena, Czech Lawn-Tennis Club (where Navratilova trained before immigrating to the US) and Toyota Arena, home to AC Sparta. We had a great tour of Sazka and received a book about the development of the arena, and were even allowed on the field at Toyota. Even not being much of a soccer fan, that was pretty cool. Although we didn’t have a tour of the tennis center I enjoyed seeing pictures of Martina, since she was Queen at the . . . → Keep Going: Prague: 2 Weeks In

Terezin

“We hold in common the belief that it is the obligation of historic sites to assist the public in drawing connections between the history of our site and its contemporary implications. We view stimulating dialogue on pressing social issues and promoting humanitarian and democratic values as a primary function. As a member of the Coalition; this site shares that committment.”

Countdown: < 1 week

One week from now, I will be in London!

One week and a little more than one day from now I will be….somewhere. I fly from LHR to PRG and depending on the timing I might try to make this train. I’ve just realized I’m going to need to pack clothes and mini toiletries in my carry-on because my bag will be checked straight through to Prague. At least that will make Tube navigation easier.

I can’ t believe it was almost one year ago that I was thinking about making a box.  The year has been a whirlwind and . . . → Keep Going: Countdown: < 1 week

School v. Travelling / Poland Trip

People ask me regularly how I could afford the trips I’ve taken. The answer is, it’s not that hard. I’m not a huge spender, and apart from some impulse buys, I think long and hard about whether something is ‘worth the money.’ School on the other hand is killing me. I mentioned Networth IQ a few weeks ago and while I love the site, the picture isn’t pretty. I don’t regret one penny of it, but it’s frightening to think of how far in debt I’ll be by the time I finish next year.

Speaking of traveling, I’m about to . . . → Keep Going: School v. Travelling / Poland Trip

Carl?

so apparently, my name is Carl. I suppose I’ve seen worse variations of my name.

I have one more final, a take home due for marketing on Monday and I have no motivation whatsoever to finish it. The kicker, it’s not even that hard. So hopefully the heart walk tomorrow will kick me in gear – had far too much free time today to not do anything, and that’s exactly what I did. At least the marketing finalis fun: mini-marketing plan for a destination. I was going to do Gettysburg but seeing as my professor knows all about that project, . . . → Keep Going: Carl?

One hell of a week…

but it’s over.

Not a bad week at all, just crazy. We had the PGAV/Gettysburg Foundation presentation on Tuesday and I think it went well. All parties seemed happy and I think we, both as a class and as six teams targeting six segments, did a very good job. I loved the fact that we were able to take what we learned and apply it in real life situations, it’s part of why grad school seems so much more real than undergrad. I’d upload the PowerPoint but I don’t even have a copy of our final segments. The one for . . . → Keep Going: One hell of a week…

Jetrosexual?

Thursday 24 May: Newark to London:Heathrow Friday 25 May: Heathrow to Prague Saturday 23 June: Prague to Switzerland. Train/plane plans not completely set but I think I’m going via train for the scenery. Monday 25 June: Geneva to New York

The interim month is, of course, summer study abroad. Four weeks, two classes. We’ll be travelling during the classes as well, both around the Czech Republic and for Sports Tourism the professor is talking about a weekend trip to either Turino or one of the World Cup sites. Still planning to also try and visit Poland, which I didn’t get . . . → Keep Going: Jetrosexual?

First Encounter

First encounter with a place, as with love, is one you never forget. As I’ve alluded to in the past, for me, it’s Spain. Even today, almost five years since my first return trip to Spain in October 2002, I can’t forget the feeling of seeing the same statues at Atocha and the same vendors near El Prado. It truly felt like I never left. It’s funny how some places just get their claws into you.

During my two years Down Under, I eventually made it to the real outback, fed kangaroos by hand and even held a koala at . . . → Keep Going: First Encounter
