I reread some of the posts from my Holocaust summer that included Auschwitz, BirkenauA, and Terezin, among others. I learned so much that summer, but I was also saturated. After doing Poland, I couldn’t do the Berlin memorial. One day, I’ll do the DC one. Almost feel due, in an odd sense.
The camps were really the final determinant in the Israel trip. Somehow I don’t have a single photo of Yad VaShem. Not sure how that happened. Holocaust has always been . . . → Keep Going: Memories: Travel and Otherwise
By Cari, on July 10th, 2007% I’m having fun reading the list of typical rookie mistakes on Bootsnall. It’s an interesting read because it’s a non-accusatory ‘we’ve all done it’ type list. Some favourites:
1. Overplanning. Train from here, flight from here, 3 days here, 2 days there, this hostel, blah blah blah. It never works out like you think it should so give yourself a rough plan, a few must sees and then make the rest up..
I thought I’d learned my lesson, but it’s something I still end up doing. I do it less but once I’d arrived in Prague I was somewhat . . . → Keep Going: “Rookie Mistakes”

Mom and I went to the King Tut Exhibit in Philadelphia. I went to the outskirts of Philly to visit a friend a few years back but hadn’t been to the city since I was about 8. The exhibit was at the Franklin Institute and I still had fun puttering around there even though it’s more geared toward children.
The coolest thing about the drive down there and back? We saw a car with a Guam license plate! On every family vacation Jordan and I would keep track of . . . → Keep Going: So this was some local travelling…

BA still has no idea where it is, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be lost. There’s nothing that exciting in it. The line was huge at JFK but the staff really tried to keep a sense of humour on a hot, sticky night. Kudos to them.
Switzerland was amazing and there will be photos later. The scenery is just phenomenal.
ETA: I updated my Flight Memory: still only halfway to the moon (since Aug 2001) but I’m getting there. The balance of this summer’s flights (HPN-ORD-LAX-AKL-MEL-ADL-BNE-LAX-ORD-HPN) will help
By Cari, on June 22nd, 2007% In the course of my packing, I decided to clean out my wallet because it’s nearing the point of weighing more than my carry on. Apart from the usual litter of receipts, I have the following:
8.20 Euros. Somewhat deliberate as I changed the notes when I returned to Prague in a futile attempt not to have to withdraw any more cKs while here. I figured the ~8 would be enough to get a sandwich and drink at Munich Hauptbahnhof. While I’m at it, Euros. I always hear how hard US coins are because neither the dime nor quarter are . . . → Keep Going: Currencies Gone Wild

create your own visited country map or check our Venice travel guide I think I’ve travelled a lot, but then I look at that map and am somewhat unimpressed. Far too much grey space.I could cheat and list the two countries I’ll visit before going home, but Europe is so squished that it’s hard to tell. The new class is going well. We had two half days of class followed by tours of the city. Areas I’d seen before but nice to see them again. I think it’s safe to say we had the most fun trying . . . → Keep Going: Travel and C&HT

I still haven’t finished with the photos, but I’m getting there. Speaking of getting there…
I arrived at Fiumicino around 4 pm and Italian passport control was easy. He stamped *over* one of my other stamps. I really need to get to the embassy here in Prague to get the extra pages because I’m going to have issues soon. I know, I’ve only been saying this since Japan. I knew I could do a train/metro combo but decided for the direct train into Rome-Termini because that’s where the hostel was and I was . . . → Keep Going: Rome: Recap with (some) photos…

So according to Flight Memory, I’ve flown 112,781 miles since August 2001. I’m not sure whether I expected that to be higher or lower, but I wish there were an equivalent for the bus since apparently the circumfrence of Australia is 10,000 miles and I doubled up in some areas and also went up and down the middle. Re: flight travel, I could go back further but I’m not sure I’ll remember all flights and I don’t think it will add a significant amount with the exception of London in December 2000 and Spain in April . . . → Keep Going: Distance Travelled/River Cruise/Tickets Booked
By Cari, on April 18th, 2007% I’m sure I’m committing heresy by saying this as a New Yorker, but I really dislike the NYC Subway system. Not for the usual reasons you hear: dirtiness, safety, etc. I don’t think either of those are nearly as bad as the media makes them out to be.
A quick visual overview: Osaka vs. New York City
There’s no question that New York City has far more lines and might evn be better compared with Tokyo, but even factoring in PATH, Metro North, etc. ,NYC doesn’t have anywhere near the mix of public and private lines that Tokyo does. I’ve . . . → Keep Going: Subways*: Osaka vs. New York
