Wow

I said to a friend that this trip to Israel might just make me update this. I’ve been meaning to all week. Israel is *fabulous* and I already have a next-time to-do list

*Temple Mount – Lonely Planet says it’s possible, in practice it didn’t seem so and I didn’t have sufficient time to explore.
*Bethlehem, Jericho… – we just ran short on time and after the trying time at the Jordanian/Israeli border at Aqaba/Eilat, I decided I wasn’t up for trying to access the West Bank. Next time.
*Masada (again!) when it’s cooler.

More later, with pictures.

2009: The Off Season

Well after yesterday’s loss, it’s well and truly the off season. The Giants playing well had helped ease the pain following the first Yankee team not to make playoffs since 1993. I still can’t switch gears to baseball yet, it’s too damn cold. Anyway, my thoughts on the Giants season are here: Part 1 |   Part 2

They were therapy to write. Cathartic. A good way to avoid the media, which is, as usual, acting as if the apocalypse is upon us.  I swear the only thing I’m still reading because it’s realistic and not over-the-top drama is Vacchiano The Blue Screen. . . . → Keep Going: 2009: The Off Season

Travel Books

World Hum has a great post on the Travel Books We Loved in 2007. Surprisingly, I haven’t read any of them. Haven’t even heard of more than a few. [Just what I need, a longer wishlist ]. I think the ones I’m most interested in reading are:

Words Without Borders: The World Through the Eyes of Writers –Alane Salierno Mason, Dedi Felman and Samantha Schnee
Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron (actually already on my wishlist)
Down the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman’s Skiff by Rosemary Mahoney

No particular reason, they just sound interesting, especially the first. My choices don’t . . . → Keep Going: Travel Books

Viva Las Vegas

Las Vegas…nothing like I really expected it to be. When I first booked the trip I had no real expectations. I just wanted to go somewhere I hadn’t been and a domestic trip was more reasonable given the time constraints of a long weekend. So Vegas it was with the added benefit that Tam could easily join me.

Although that was actually taken as we left the Excalibur and walked to the Luxor on Sunday morning, it summed up the character of the Excalibur. Fun and funky. I’d have liked a better shot of the hotel but because it’s . . . → Keep Going: Viva Las Vegas

Backpacking and Backpacks…

I *know* I’ve added “backpacking” as a category more than once now, yet it never shows in my category list. It’s under “Travel and Tourism” but for some reason, sub headers don’t show here. Weird. Anyway…

The other day, GoBudgetTravel asked “Is the Backpack Even Necessary“, which followed a post from this summer ” What Backpacking Is and Is Not“. Both of these were interesting reads. As far as what backpacking is, his #1 point is the one with which I agree the most:

A budget travel strategy that stresses blending in, and living like the people to develop a better understanding of . . . → Keep Going: Backpacking and Backpacks…

Common Regrets/Myths/

There’s a guest post on Budget Globetrotting about the “5 Common Regrets of First Time Travelers” by the author of the blog Go Budget Travel and it really made me think…

His list of regrets is:

1.Traveling too quickly
2. Trying to do too much
3. Spending too much time in internet cafés and hanging around the hostel
4. Not getting more involved in local life
5. Not having more adventures

I agree with some, but I strongly disagree with others. For one, I think 2 and 5 contradict one another. Not everything has to be an adventure and some of the little things are the . . . → Keep Going: Common Regrets/Myths/

Jetrosexual?

Thursday 24 May: Newark to London:Heathrow
Friday 25 May: Heathrow to Prague
Saturday 23 June: Prague to Switzerland. Train/plane plans not completely set but I think I’m going via train for the scenery.
Monday 25 June: Geneva to New York

The interim month is, of course, summer study abroad. Four weeks, two classes. We’ll be travelling during the classes as well, both around the Czech Republic and for Sports Tourism the professor is talking about a weekend trip to either Turino or one of the World Cup sites. Still planning to also try and visit Poland, which I didn’t get to do last time, and . . . → Keep Going: Jetrosexual?

“Necessary” Luxury Expenditures

There is plenty of discussion about saving for travels (5 Steps to Save Money Like Buddha is one of the more interesting ones). Not just in terms of saving money for a trip, but other savings so that you’ll have more money available to spend while traveling. I’m all about saving money in anticipation of a trip and/or economizing while I’m on the road but for me there are some non-negotiables:

Internet – this has changed somewhat with the increase of free wireless in many locations, but I won’t give up my internet connection. Whether it be to stay in touch with . . . → Keep Going: “Necessary” Luxury Expenditures

First Encounter

First encounter with a place, as with love, is one you never forget. As I’ve alluded to in the past, for me, it’s Spain. Even today, almost five years since my first return trip to Spain in October 2002, I can’t forget the feeling of seeing the same statues at Atocha and the same vendors near El Prado. It truly felt like I never left. It’s funny how some places just get their claws into you.

During my two years Down Under, I eventually made it to the real outback, fed kangaroos by hand and even held a koala at . . . → Keep Going: First Encounter

Tourist/Traveler: Redux

Sightseeing can’t compete with miracle of everyday lives, it really can’t. That’s some of what I tried to get across in my previous post on the topic of tourism v. travel.  The Lost Globe cautions against the anti-tourist

He misses the worlds best attractions because there are to many tourists there and the location has lost it’s authenticity.

and I agree with that sentiment.  The anti-tourist is so busy ‘traveling’ that s/he doesn’t see the world that unfolds around them. I think there’s something to be said for avoiding tourist traps which can be disappointing, but you can see a touristed destination while still . . . → Keep Going: Tourist/Traveler: Redux
