it’s not that I don’t agree with Christopher Elliot’s post on the topic, but rather it’s sad that we accept these…

Inconvenient “convenience” fees – I think this one bothers me the most. That said, I experienced the fees far more in Japan and Australaia than I did here, so it’s yet another case of the US catching up with the rest of the world. The “convenience” fee that I don’t mind is the exit row and other extended legroom options as Virgin America charges for them. I don’t agree with the airlines that make these available only to elite level, they should be available to those willing to pay. It’s interesting to see how it’s going to shake out with booking fees, as I’ve mentioned before.

Gridlock on the ground: the sequel – I agree with Christopher here, Mass Transit. Last school year I was commuting 80+ miles a day on school days from Nyack -> Suffern -> Midtown or Astor Place. I was killing my car and my sanity. Now with the internship in Manhattan, I take the TZ Express from Nyack to Tarrytown, where I pick up MetroNorth. Someone else fights the traffic and I get to read or sleep, sounds like a win win to me.

So maybe it’s not the end of the world…

A Million Miles vs. a Few More Smiles from today’s New York Times

While I realize the issue(s) facing those interviewed:

Like many other frequent business travelers, he finds that there is only one airline whose flight schedule fits his needs.

“I’m not loyal,” he adds. “I’m just a hostage.”

it bothers me.

Maybe I’m spoiled in the NY area where I have, at minimum, four viable airports (HPN, EWR, LGA and JFK) and innumerable airline choices but I find it very hard to imagine an airport where there is a monopoly. Or if not a monopoly, a time monopoly. If the traveler’s schedule is so strict that only one makes it, how does s/he tolerate the unavoidable delays?

In an article on SmarterTravel.com titled “Frequent Flyer Resolutions for 2008,” he wrote, “My first resolution is to continue my gradual disengagement from mileage programs.”

In a way, that’s what I’ve been doing. I don’t want to feel tied to one program. Granted, there are times I wish I didn’t do this in order to more easily attain elite status, but I don’t mind being non-elite for the sake of my sanity. A good example is Virgin America, eleVAte hasn’t launched officially and even when it launches it isn’t likely to be aligned with any of the Big Three, but the flight times and prices are good. To me, it’s about more than mileage.

…interesting FlyerTalk discussion on the article as well…

or more precisely, where’s it coming from?

I’m not sure where it stemmed from, but something interested me enough to sign up for a book ring of Go: An Airline Adventure last fall. I adored the book and subsequently read Nuts!, which I also loved and this morning started Blue Streak. On Mt. TBR I have From Worst to First and just mooched A Spirit of Greatness.

Confession time, I’ve never flown jetBlue or Southwest. Southwest doesn’t have a ton of options from the NYC area and on several occasions where I’ve intended to fly jetBlue, something comes out cheaper. My recent flights to and from LAX are a classic case of this. I’d love to fly into BUR because it’s so much less insane than LAX (although I’ve become somewhat immune to that insanity having been through there some 10 times in 2007) but the times are awful (red eye gets into JFK at 5 AM and the price just isn’t that good. Virgin America is ahead of them by leaps and bounds and even the legacy carriers usually work out better. For me there has to be a compelling reason to go to JFK – VX is, jetBlue isn’t.

My question is: what, if anything, should I do with this airline interest.

Post to Delicious Post to Facebook

sometimes it’s hard to decide. My general rule of thumb is that if the drive is less than five hours, it’s not worth it. Here’s why:

with the exception of HPN, I need to allow at least an hour to get to the airports. This applies whether I’m driving from home or taking mass transit from work. If I’m going via mass transit to HPN, then that’s an hour too.

two hour arrival time, again that’s with the exception of HPN. The NYC area airports are such a zoo that <2 hours, even without luggage, worries me.

1 hour flight (roughly for a 350 mile drive)

de-planing, meeting people or getting tround transport, travel time from the airport…

Yep, five hours gone. That’s not to say I haven’t broken that “rule” on several occasions — namely when I don’t feel like driving to Rochester or the fare is so good that it’s not worth it once you figure in gas and tolls. I usually end up regretting it, partially due to the issues discussed in the recent Today in the Sky. Travelling through the NY airports just isn’t smooth.

It’s interesting to look at the Bradley-Newark flight that Jeanne Leblanc discussed today. Ignoring the fact that the flight is of no use to me personally — I’m almost equi-distant between the two, slightly closer to EWR – the drive is probably < 3 hours even with traffic. I’m guessing it’s of use to business folk but I can’t imagine what time it might save, even without the delays.

As I plan travels — I keep the 5 hour idea in mind. The break-even point is going to change though with:

more flights from HPN, and in the Spring/Summer I’ll be willing to risk the midwest connection in either DTW or ORD

the rising cost of gas and NYS Thruway tolls (although I do have EZ Pass). Note: for all four years of college it cost $9.95 each way between the Exit 16 toll barrier and exit 45 for 490/Roc – this was before the EZ Pass discount was much of anything. This weekend (I won’t take the toll-free 17/390 in the winter) it was $10.85 each way to Exit 43.

On Friday I went over my normal protests and trekked out to JFK, but for a good reason. VX!

I flew from JFK to LAX and that was a nice flight. Highlights:

mood lighting — much less harsh than typical airline light, I almost didn’t need my eye mask.

IFE/Red Network – lots of fun both for the ability to order food on demand but also for the games. Loved that it was active from boarding to de-boarding, meant that we could continue to play Mahjong as we sat on the taxi way at LAX waiting for a gate. Also the flight journey was GoogleMaps which was fun to play with.

The main downsides? The cost of the food and limited selection of same is easy to overcome. Will bring my own next flight. However going to Kennedy is a royal pain. I can’t help being spoiled, EWR is far less of a hassle to get to. I’d love it if VX flew from EWR but that’s not going to stop me from flying it. The price is good, as is the service.

Plus, you can’t beat he novelty factor at this stage.

so in the course of re-visiting Vayama I mentioned United’s new fee. Well guess what, they’re not alone.

According to Christopher Elliott’s post on the topic, CO has joined the game too. I love Continental, but paying to book on the website is insane. As I said last time, it’s not like the airlines are paying a fee or commission, as the online agencies do. Sheer insanity is what it is.

I used to like booking directly through CO for the booking bonus, but apparently that’s now gone too. Web 2.0 is supposed to bring convenience, not more fees. Is it a good or bad thing that word is quickly spreading about these new policies?

What will be interesting to watch is whether these stick when the recent fare increase did not.

I still maintain this is as ridiculous as a brick and mortar store charging us to walk in the door and use their cash register. As always, I’ll vote with my $.

I’ve really enjoyed reading the New York Times’ new blog: JetLagged. It’s the first airline-centered blog I’ve read that’s written by multiple authors and presents an interesting range of views on different topics.

Pico Iyer’s recent post, The Friendliest Country, and the Unfriendliest Skies is a great read. I’ve read a few of Iyer’s books and some of his contributions to anthologies, but I hadn’t read his work in blog format prior to his contributions to JetLagged.

When comparing foreign-flag carriers to those operating under the US flag, he noted that they provide good service:

instead of the large, angry and tired militants on U.S. flights to Japan, who act as if every question is an insult, and every passenger an injury.

While I agree in general, and no currently-operating airline will ever top Singapore, I found the service between the US and Japan to be significantly better than US->elsewhere. I attribute that, in part, to the Japanese staff on board NWA flights (I’ve never flown JAL) and the Korean staff on KE. Asian culture demands higher-quality service (think elevator ladies in Takashimaya) than US culture. Sure there are some people, many even, who take respect and politeness as their badge of honor, but in general it cannot compare.

I don’t fly *Alliance often. I actually need to find a way to pick up my soon to expire SQ miles. I’ve found CO’s service to be above par for the US airlines, and the Eagle flights out of HPN are great. I think there are bad apples everywhere, but Iyer’s post raises some interesting questions.

The New York Times has on its website some reader comments to their November 25th article, Class Conflict. Some interesting comments, but in my opinion, a lot of over-reaction as well. If flying coach from Sydney to LAX is going to induce a “14 hour panic-attack” then I think there are other issues.

I said it then and I’ll say it again… I don’t think coach is the end of the world. I’d much rather spend the $ on another aspect of my trip, but that’s just me. A me who has survived the following in coach:

EWR-DTW-KIX in August 01 (much saner flying time)

KIX-SIN-BNE and return (although SQ coach is a dream!)

KIX-DTW-LGA

LAX-NAD

MEL-SIN-KIX

KIX-YVR-JFK (and return)

KIX-ICN-LAX

HPN-ORD-LAX-AKL-MEL (OK, I’ll admit to being worn out at the end of that one. 33 hours travel time, ~21 flying)

I agree that there are issues with the US airlines that need to be addressed — namely horrendous customer service and delays, but I don’t think coach is the end of the world.

On another note, I’m currently reading Nuts! and thoroughly enjoying it, even though I’ve never had the chance to fly Southwest. I seem to be on a business strategy/airline kick lately.

I first discovered and mentioned Vayama back in October when I discovered it via a post on Spontaneous Tourism. I admit, I didn’t end up thinking much about Vayama again until I received a comment from Matt, Vayama’s Industry Relations Manager.

I like how he handled the contact, an actual question about the content of the blog post rather than just a random comment and a promotional link as some companies have been known to do, so I responded and it led to a further comment (wonderful information there about some less-than-obvious benefits to Vayama) and an e-mail exchange. I decided I wanted to think some more about vayama and my thoughts on online agencies and booking fees in general.

Net result:

I still love Vayama’s specials especially since their searches/specials include HPN.

Although the fares include their own negotiated and consolidator rates, it seems that tickets purchased from Vayama willbe eligible for mileage accrual. That’s a personal favorite since I’m still steaming over the miles I lost on a flight from KIX to JFK and back via Vancouver.

I love the “Getting Around” sections which seem to be quite comprehensive and accurate. A wonderful tool especially since their searches include some off the beaten track destinations.

Possibly my favorite part of this section is the blogs link, allowing a potential visitor to see what others have seen/thought about the destination. This comes from a partnership with TravelPod. My only complaint here, and this may be due to the TravelPod feed, is that the blog posts don’t seem to be in any order.

I’m still not sure what I think about the booking fees. But then again travelocity has booking fees and I booked the Vegas trip through them. I think it would come down to as it did then…travelocity including the fee was cheaper than buying the plane ticket and booking the hotel separately.

It appears, however, that the booking agents aren’t the only ones charging fees. According to a CrankyFlier post, US Airways has implemented a booking fee when you book directly via their website. I don’t get it. I can *almost* buy the argument for a fee when calling the phone center because they have to pay to staff them, however to use their website? What’s next? Paying to use a cash register at a store? Booking fees when purchasing directly make no sense. None. At least the agencies’ is explained via commissions and fees that they pay…what is US Airways doing? Paying itself a commission?

Bottom line, I’d still shop around, and if Vayama was cheaper I’d book through them. I’ll certainly use them alongside SideStep and Kayak for my initial searches. I like their site, and I like how they handle their interaction with the blogosphere. I’d love to see them do well.
